Are You Looking for Things to Do in Flagstaff?

Here are a few out-of-the-way events in Flagstaff this weekend, two of them fund-raisers for United Way and, in cooperation with United Way, Flagstaff's Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

If you are not yet a KNAU fan, you should become one. Our local NPR station (which has become not-so-Renee Montagnelocal, with 11 stations throughout Northern Arizona), celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the High Country Conference Center last night. Hundreds of people showed up to hear a brief history of the station from General Manager John Stark, and then an entertaining, and educational, look at the history of NPR's most popular program: Morning Edition by national guests, host Renee Montagne(pictured right) and Producer Ellen McDonald. Developments in the ability to report from places like South African townships and the Congo in the last 20 years (think satellite phones and computers connected to satellites) and insight into why NPR's reporting of the Iraq invasion was so different from the national TV networks (also related to technology!) fascinated the crowd (or, at least this member of it). Here is our Flagstaff newspaper's story about the event: Not Your Average Day Job.

KNAU is one of Flagstaff's gems and is consistently a "stand-out" among National Public Radio's member stations. Within just the last 18 months, our local station has won several Edward R. Murrow journalism awards. Check out the KNAU website here: KNAU: Arizona Public Radio and learn why you'll want to learn the numbers on your dial as soon as you move to Flagstaff! For those of you in other parts of the country -- listen to it "streaming" on your computer. You'll love it!

By the way, National Public Radio listeners identify themselves across the political spectrum, with those who self-identify as "conservative" almost the same percentage as those who idenfity as "liberal." It's just good, solid news that makes you think!

Flagstaff Real Estate Day -- Foreclosures Suspended for the Holidays!

It's a good day for Flagstaff real estate. There are more sales reported (including one of mine) than listings made. And look at those price reductions! In other words, sellers "getting real."

Amazing news from the mortgage giants today: Foreclosures suspended for the holidays! No that is not a joke. Read: MarketWatch.com: Home for the Holidays. More on why this happened, in my opinion, at Treading Water Hoping for a Bailout.
